The AESW performs steel smelting using the state-of-the-art arc 130 ton steel-melting furnace (SMF). For its operation, an effective combination of electrical and chemical energy is used. As a result, the exit temperature of the metal reaches 1,580—1,620 °C.

The metal production procedure is automated: Charging buckets are used to load scrap into the furnace. Next, smelting takes place according to the standard in-process algorithm to ensure consistent high quality. Quicklime that is also made at the AESW is used as a flux.

Despite the automation, the melting process is under the constant control of metallurgists. Where necessary, they promptly adjust the process.
After the SMF, the melt is poured into the 'furnace-ladle' station. Here the liquid metal is reduced (deoxidized). Special additives are used to improve physical and chemical properties (alloying), and the metal gets refined to remove unnecessary impurities (refining).
In order to obtain steel of a certain composition and a given quality, the specialists do regular sampling during the finishing and measure the temperature of the metal. Next stage: the overhead crane transfers the ladle with molten steel to the continuous casting machine (CCM).
By means of a slide gate in the bottom part of the ladle, the metal is poured into a buffer tank, and then it spreads through the columns of the copper water-cooled crystallizer. The use of this technology ensures better quality of billets without any defect that could worsen their piercing properties.
After the billets are cooled down and crystallized, they are cut, marked and transported to a walking-beam cooler to ensure the preservation of long rolled products straightness without twisting, slide-free transportation (to avoid scratches), and the final cooling of the product.
